Where are You? (part 1)

February 24, 2009

Here at Overflow Church we focus heavily on discipleship and provoking believers to a level of maturity that allows them to function as a hearer and a doer of the word.

In the last few messages here at Overflow, I have used these examples on a couple of occasions. Reading a couple of different blogs today made me think, I should touch on these topics on my blog. I know I have brought them on Sunday morning, but not everyone reading attends our church.

Hebrews 5:12-14

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. 14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

This is such an interesting passage of scripture, because Paul uses natural example of maturation and growth to explain a spiritual condition.

When a child is a newborn we feed them they are nursed, or given formula through a bottle, and eventually take on whole or regular milk. During this time the mom or dad holds the child, holds the bottle and carefully feeds the child watching every meal with intensity.

In the next stage of life, a parent begins to introduce some solid foods. In the first few feedings the parent may feed the child and help them take bites, eventually leading up to the point where the child can feed themselves as long as a plate is placed in front of them. In this stage the parent still watches the child during every meal with a high level of interest and concern.

The final stage of the child’s ability to eat is when they come to the mom or dad and tell them they are hungry. The parent tells them there is food in the refrigerator, therefore the child runs to the fridge grabs something and beings to eat. The parent is aware of the child eating, but is not particularly focused on the child eat.

These are the same stages that Paul is discussing in Hebrews concerning a believer’s spiritual condition. You see many Christians ought to be teachers by now, at least ministering to people around them, yet they still don’t get the basics of following Christ.

In a believers journey to maturity they go through the same steps and stages as a newborn baby.

In the first stage the new believer needs milk and nourishment in the word. The pastor, life group leader, or friend walks them through simple messages of love, new beginnings, grace, mercy, and such. They are getting the milk. A taste of what God has for them and it is satisfying.

In the next stage, the believer is not satisfied with the milk any longer, and they want some more solid food to chew on and process. In this stage the believer is coming to church and the plate is being placed in front of them. On Sunday morning the pastor is helping those taking bites through the preaching of the Word. Then the believer can process the food or take some bites of their own by asking questions of their pastor, life group leader, etc… One thing to remember in this stage is just like the child that a parent is helping feed their first few solids, sometimes the new believer takes in the milk into their mouth and spits it out. Then the pastors (parents) have to clean up the mess and continue to feed them.

In the next stage, definitely not final stage of a believer’s life, the believer begins to enter into some maturity. The believer is able to grab his/her Bible, open the Word and feed themselves. Sometimes the hunger comes from a word preached on Sunday and they want more, or something they hear on the radio. It is just like when the mom or dad says there is food in the refrigerator.

It begs the question: If you honestly looked at your life, and were only disclosing this information to yourself, where are you in the stages of maturing as a believer?

The Message!

February 10, 2009

I am very excited about this Sunday’s Celebration Service here at Overflow Church!

We have some special things going on this weekend, and I have been pumping this service to our Life Groups and our friends around the area. One of the things I have been doing is casting the vision that this particular Sunday will be pivotal to us reaching our goals & vision for 2009! The team and the people in our Life Groups have caught that vision.

We are a church of 20 people! We have approximately 24 vocal commitments to attending this Sunday’s Celebration Service titled “The Message”.

Those numbers are right. This Sunday at church we will have more visitors in our body than we will partners in our church! PRAISE GOD!

You see we have been working diligently to get this set up and ordered the way that God has been speaking to us about. Last week we set up our NEW Sound System (first one actually). We have now have a full audio/video package working with the projector, and the wonderful audio components in place.

I am very excited about this weekend, and it will be one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful, messages I have every preached! Hence, the title “The Message”!

This will be a very powerful kingdom-minded presentation of the gospel. I believe that it will touch/rock those people that are far from God, or simply do not attend church for one reason or another that will be attending.

If you are in the Appleton area your invited to Overflow Church’s presentation of “the message”. If your not from the Appleton area, and you believe prayer changes things, it changes everything, then please pray for the Holy Spirit to move in power and love during this week of preparation. Please pray that all those who answered yes, will come and bring friends and/or family. Please pray that the Holy Spirit really blows through our service on Sunday in a wonderful, awe inspiring way.

Tuesday Night Reflections

January 21, 2009

What an exciting week the last seven days have been.

  • Ashlee and I went out on a date Friday Night. It was a lot of fun. We went to the Texas Roadhouse for steak, and then over to Family Christian to order the 2 books release by Alan Vincent.
  • Saturday was crazy. I met Pastor Landon for coffee at 8:00, attended 2 birthday parties in the afternoon, dealt with 3 phone calls after the parties, and then went to Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) to watch the UFC.
  • Sunday truly was awesome! I obeyed God and invited several people to our Vision Sunday Service. Even though I did not preach and I laid out the vision for 2009 and long term vision for Overflow, people were touched. (That never gets old)
  • Then both teams I was rooting for on Sunday won! I am so excited to see my Steelers in the big show once again!
  • God has been challenging me the week in several ways. One way is in my eating. (check back later this week for a blog on food and health)
  • The Wii Fit has been dealing me some exhausting workouts. Who knew a video game could make me loose 2 lbs in 4 days.
  • In Matthew 18:19-21 Jesus tells us that if two people agree to anything on Earth that it will be done for them by God. How awesome is that? (I do believe it  must still line up with Scripture)
  • God has been challenging me to understand this reality in a new way. In Alan Vincent’s new book Heaven on Earth he states that two people can change a city, 20 can change a region.
  • Can you imagine that the Kingdom of God is powerful that just two believers coming to a Kingdom-Minded Faith that says just two people can change Appleton, Wisconsin (Insert Your City)?
  • I am excited about our 2009 Life Groups kicking off tomorrow.
  • In the next few days I will be blogging about Dora, food, Social Clubs, and San Antonio’s Brazilian Steakhouse so check back often for some of these interesting topics.

Vision Sunday January 18th

January 16, 2009

I am so excited about this coming Sunday’s Vision Sunday. I have been away from blogging this week, so I could spend extra time preparing and seeking God for this service.

I finished up last night. I will still go over it I am sure before Sunday, but I am done!

Invite

I wanted to invite everyone in the Appleton area to come to this Sunday’s Vision Sunday Service at 10 AM. We will be having a discussion time concerning our 2009 Vision and Strategy at our Life Group on Wednesday January 21st at 6:30 PM. The vision Sunday is designed to communicate what we are developing for 2009 here at Overflow Church. We have spent many hours in prayer and begging God for wisdom for this up coming year.

We will kick our year off with a winter/spring semester called Renovate. The definition of renovate is to make new again, to restore to freshness, to give new life to, to rejuvenate, to reinvigorate, and recreate. I personally believe that renovation is what many people need in their life to feel refreshed and full of joy.

Most people I meet are searching for happiness, but that fluctuates so much based on what is happening. I believe most of them are actually searching for an overriding JOY that comes from a relationship with Jesus.

During our Renovation Semester it is my prayer that people begin to tap into the JOY of a deeper or new relationship with Jesus Christ.

I believe Romans 8:28 when it says that all things work together for good to those who love God. In these struggling times of our country God is still relentlessly pursuing you! I hope to help you pursue Him in 2009

Tuesday Night Reflections!

January 14, 2009

I am very thankful to be back in Appleton after 12 wonderful days in Texas.

  • I am so excited that my Steelers are in the AFC championship game this weekend!
  • I really enjoyed my time in Texas with my family. It was a wonderful time to reconnect with my brother and sister-in-law.  My sister was off the entire time, which was great.
  • God’s favor was on our travels. We did not see any rain or snow the entire drive down, and only for about 50 miles on the drive home.
  • I had some amazing times in the word while we were in Texas. I will share some of the things in the coming days and weeks. God is so good! I was up at 5:30 to 6:00 each morning and ran out to a different coffee shop each morning with the IPOD to do some reading.
  • I honestly thought I would spend at least an hour a day working on some church stuff, but the time in the Word and prayer was so powerful, I never actually got to work on anything.
  • We ended our trip with a quick 4 1/2 hour drive south (yes the wrong direction) to San Antonio. It was wonderful reconnecting with my pastor. It had been 3 years since I had seen him. I talk with him regularly, but had not hung out in a while.
  • We had dinner at an amazing place, the Brazilian Steakhouse. (I will post about it soon)
  • After dinner Thursday Night I found out that I had an opportunity to speak at the Believer’s Academy on Friday morning. I discussed the Post Modern and Secular Humanism word views that most of our culture has embraced with a passion. I discussed the differences between the Texas culture and Wisconsin Culture.
  • I went into detail about intellectualism and atheistic viewpoints that state that Christianity is a man-made agenda. I also was able to discuss the difficulties in church planting, and the things I have found surprising a long the way. It was a great experience. I got to speak in a Sophomore and Senior class.
  • My wife had an amazing opportunity to speak at the Women’s ministry meeting for All Nations Church on Friday Night.  It was a last minute opportunity, because their speaker fell through, and we just happen to be in town.
  • The reports I got were that my wife spoke a word that touched many of the women in the meeting. I am so proud of her.
  • Several people have asked me what I have been reading, studying, preparing lately. To be honest, I have spent the majority of my time the last 2 weeks preparing for our Vision Sunday Service this Sunday. (See Invite on yesterday’s blog entry)
  • I am so excited about what is going to do here in the Fox Valley and here at Overflow. 2009 is going to be a year of extraordinary fun and fruit.

Nothing too deep tonight, sorry. In the coming days I will blog about the Brazilian Steakhouse, Social Clubs, and the things God has been speaking to me about during my preparations for 2009.

Okay…I am finally learning!

December 19, 2008

Have you ever been in a situation where you were just being a sponge, and suddenly you realized your soaking a lot of it up into your spirit (which is good), but in your mind your not learning a thing?

That is the realization that hit me today. (Wednesday Dec 17, 2008). I realized that God has been taking me to the woodshed for 2 weeks now, and He has been disciplining me, counseling me, comforting me, and breathing life into me. My spirit has loved it, but my soul (mind, will, and emotions) was still lagging way behind.

NOT ANYMORE! PRAISE GOD! Today, I had breakthrough revelation that will shape the way I spend the rest of my life.

Today I got free from conforming, doing things to please _____, selling out my calling in order to recreate someone elses vision, among other things.  In the future this blog will consist of my Tuesday Night Reflections, and hopefully some entertaining blogs, but most importantly it will be used to let you guys know what God has been speaking to me, doing in me, and directing me into. It will also let you know my weaknesses and the things I am struggling with, so that you can go to war with/for me.

To start:
2 weeks ago today God gave me a prophetic word for the church today. It was a prophetic word for Overflow, but also, I believe a word for THE church. So this past Sunday I lent my time for preaching to the battle that is going on in the heavenlies for those Christians who have fallen away from faith.

It was powerful.  Even before that Sunday we started to see some fruit from me praying the declarations in my private time with God. Since, Sunday we have seen some fruit.

This week I have also been begging God and making some prophetic declarations over some of my friends situations, and I am anticipating the GOOD NEWS that comes from their testimonies about how God came through for them. Please guys, share any testimonies with me, I want to hear all the GOOD NEWS in the Kingdom.

Then today, I began to get the revelation that puts together all of these different things I have been praying for, hearing, and declaring into the heavenlies. It was absolutely amazing. God began to speak to me so clearly, and quickly I was almost dizzy. (Praise God)

God answered my prayers for a new vision statement to help define who we are. Out of it, came this amazing revelation. “I had to repent for trying to recreate something that was meant for Clyde, Texas. We are the same DNA, and want to build the same type of church, but to recreate it was simply selling out and being lazy to what God has called me to do here in Appleton. God began to show me how that has hindered our growth and more importantly His presence in some of the things we have done.

Here is a declaration of what I am going to be doing in 2009!

  • I am going to “Dream Big Dreams ” – I am no longer going to cap the size of church I want, or the amount of growth I want. I have been limiting an unlimited God!
  • I am going to beg God to come through on those dreams.
  • I am going to walk a dangerous, risk taking journey toward my destiny, allowing God to build the bridges in my life.
  • I am going to beg God to show up in a manifest presence that allows us to worship Him freely.
  • I am going to pray “stupid” prayers
  • I am going to ask people for commitment
  • I am going to cast the vision of leadership and hold them to it!
  • Invite everyone to something (Life Group, Sunday Service). I mean everyone. What have I got to lose?
  • I am not going to be ashamed to just let people know that I am totally in love with Jesus. I just love Jesus!
  • I am going to love Jesus without abandon (like a man/woman trying to win someone’s heart in a sappy love story)
  • I am finally going to be ME!

Join me on this journey! I need you to partner with me.

God is about to do some awesome stuff. I am ready for the ride, are you? (Either way, buckle up!)
